About this Event
Event Photos

Reproductive assistance programs are common for humans, domestic mammals, and a variety of wild mammals. But for reptiles? Not so much.

Join Science Café to give reptiles some love—learn about reproductive assistance programs in veterinary medicine focused on improving genetics and on protecting threatened and endangered species. Such programs could help save the more than 2,000 reptile species listed as vulnerable or worse that soon could go the way of the dinosaur. To support their populations, reptiles could be placed in long-term care or head start programs supported by scientific investigation and education.

Mark A. Mitchell, professor of zoological medicine in the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine, received his Doctor in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1992 and his Ph.D. in clinical epidemiology from LSU in 2001. He is a past president of the Association of Reptilian and Amphibian Veterinarians and currently serves as director of the Wildlife Hospital of Louisiana and as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Avian Medicine and Surgery. His daily goal is to be true to his 14-year-old self and explore all this world has to offer.
