Delores Hurst, Executive Director Alzheimer’s Association—Louisiana Chapter on Alzheimer's and Domestic Violence
The Alzheimer’s Association Louisiana Chapter provides support services, care options and education for families and caregivers in New Orleans, Metairie, Lafayette, Shreveport, Baton Rouge, St. James, and Monroe.
Alzheimer's and domestic violence are interconnected, with individuals experienc?ing dementia being both potential victims and perpetrators of abuse. Victims of long-standing domestic violence may face increased vulnerability to abuse after a dementia diagnosis, while dementia can trigger aggressive behaviors in perpetra?tors, leading to new cycles of abuse or the resurgence of old patterns. The stress of caregiving for someone with dementia is also a significant risk factor for caregiver?initiated abuse.
