Join us for a Cultural Heritage Tour of one of Philadelphia’s most iconic landmarks. See how the Fairmount Water Works continues to meet challenges —from its founding to address a public health crisis in the 1800s, through the changing climate of the 21st century.
Learn about the late 20th century rehabilitation of the site and the challenges and possibilities for the protection of the historic Fairmount Water Works which still stands as a beautiful and enduring symbol of the city’s commitment to providing clean public drinking water.
Ellen Freedman Schultz, Director of Strategic Partnerships Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center/ Philadelphia Water Department will guide the tour.
The Fund for the Water Works, a city-founded nonprofit, was formed in 1998 to restore the Fairmount Water Works. In the first decade of the Fund, philanthropist and park commissioner Ernesta Ballard oversaw the restoration of the entire site with over $30 million raised. The first two phases restored many of the structures, plazas, and the signature railing that surrounds the main buildings. The subsequent phases restored the historic South Garden and the intricate Cliff Path Trail system and gazebos. Philadelphia Parks and Recreation then restored the 1926 Italian Fountain, forming a grand gateway to the campus, and created the new Fairmount Boardwalk and Trail.
