About this Event

Richard Hodges (baritone), accompanied by Tabitha Johnson (piano), performs over 100 years of black-composed American art song: a concert presented by the Antiracism Committee of St John's in the Village.

In addition to being a noted interpreter of a wide range of aria and art song, Richard Hodges (richardlhodges.com) is an academic musician and musicologist with a specialism in the underrepresented oeuvre of black composers in the USA from the 18th century and forward. Composers featured include Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875-1912), Mark Fax (1911-1974), Margaret Bonds (1913-1972).

Tabitha Johnson is a 24 year old Canadian classical pianist. She holds a Bachelors of Music and a Minor in Business Entrepreneurship from McGill University (2019). Johnson completed her masters degree at Manhattan School of Music, May 2021. Highlights surrounding competitions include a concert tour of Ontario at the age of sixteen. At the Canadian Music Competition in Quebec, Johnson placed third. June 2018 she attended the Miami Music Festival where she won the concerto competition and performed with orchestra that year. Her most recent success was during the NANM three-round competition where she placed first in all three rounds. The national and final round was in July 2021. Johnson also manages a studio of 20+ students at Music Beans in downtown Manhattan and at The Spence School on the Upper East Side. Johnson enjoys performing and is glad that once again, we can resume live performances

There is no need to book for the live-stream; simply tune in at 7pm or any time thereafter:

The concert is followed by refreshments in St Benedict's Courtyard (or Common Room, if wet) where audience members have the opportunity to converse with Richard and Tabitha in person.

In-person attendance is open to all who are fully vaccinated and also to any unvaccinated person who can show a negative Covid-19 test result dated 5 or 6 August. You may be asked for proof of vaccination. Face-coverings are optional for the vaccinated, but should be worn by the unvaccinated indoors.
