Greetings Opera Cocktales Fans, Friends and Family!!YES, it's Love month! February, known for it's luscious red colors and divine tribute to the power of that wicked imp, Cupid, fires its opening arrows during a particular chaotic moment in the history of our country and the city we call home. We at Opera Cocktales know that there have been other moments in time where the political upheaval informed the musical toolbox of a talented musical writer and one such composer, who we spotlight at our upcoming performance on the 5th, was Kurt Weill.
A Jewish composer, Weill fled his native Germany in 1933 after the Nazis came to power. His works were banned as 'degenerate art'! He lived for 2 years in France before coming to the US and is one of the few composers to bridge classical, jazz and popular musical styles.
So, in addition to our vibrant operatic repertoire, we will be including a few songs and arias from Kurt Weill's stage works: Street Scene, One touch of Venus and Happy End as well as our favorite 'Love Situations' from our beloved operatic works!
In addition, we are sending any donations we receive at this month's performance to Cal-fire. Last time we did this to assist the fire recovery in Northern California, we raised close to $400 and received a lovely letter from this important organization. Though only a drop in an ocean of need, every tiny drop helps. We will post the receipt of our donation on the Opera Cocktales feed!! (As with all things, donations are more fun when done with others!)
