About this Event
For most of us, love is a mix of two things--desirous attachment and authentic love. Learning the difference between attachment and what love actually is can save us from jealousy and even heartbreak. We can solve all our problems with love, without going crazy.
Desirous attachment is not the same as desire – we need desires, but we don’t need attachment. Attachment is “dö chag” in Tibetan, which literally means “sticky desire”. Stickiness, neediness, dependency, and self-centeredness are the result of attachment. It’s “I need you to make ME happy”, as opposed to “I want to make YOU happy”, which is actual love.
Attachment stands in stark contrast to all types of love, but it can often be quite hard for us to tell them apart as our relationships are so mixed up. It is one of Buddha’s great kindnesses that he distinguishes between them so clearly. It can save us from immense heartache.
Attachment weakens us--we give away the key to our happiness.
Love strengthens us--we stay in charge of our happiness.
Learn to reduce attachment and increase the love in all your close friendships, romantic partnerships and even your most difficult relationships.
Working to do so will only bring more meaning and joy to your life.
