About this Event
Do you read romance novels? Plenty of readers today do – sales of romance fiction in the UK have risen by 110% in the last three years, the highest in a decade. Yet, romance is often dismissed as ‘trashy’, sexist and badly written. What is it about romance that readers keep coming back to? This talk by Dr Amy Burge from the University of Birmingham, gives a brief history of romance fiction in the UK, and outlines some of the things we might learn from romance novels.
In the activity session, you will get a chance to give your personal, creative response to romance fiction. Using a cut-up-and-stick method (think fridge magnets), you will rewrite a page from a romance novel into your own creative piece. What would you change about romance genre fiction if you were able to? This is your chance to ‘write back’ to the romance fiction genre.
This event will begin with a live stand-up performance and Q&A with comedian and author of ‘Sex Bomb’, Sadia Azmat, and will end with live poetry from Ashlee Elizabeth-Lolo.
