Come out to St. James on Saturday, January 3rd from 9-11am to support local author Evan Hansen. His book, "Into the Wind: Fighting Suicide One Step at a Time" will be available for purchase and for him to sign! As we start the New Year, many are choosing to focus on their mental health, and this book is one to take along on the journey. The Back of the Book:
Sometimes enough is enough.
And after suicide claimed three people from different parts of Evan "Sweet" Hansen's life, he decided to do something about it. Motivated by the losses surrounding him, Evan set out to pick a fight with suicide. But instead of throwing punches, he chose to take steps.
An experienced backpacker and outdoorsman, Evan came up with a plan: He would carry a little, yellow canoe on his shoulders for 313 miles as part of a suicide prevention awareness campaign called, "Portage for a Purpose."
What started out as an adventure turned into a mission-woven by the generosity of others and the bittersweet interactions with those he met along the way. Journey with him as he faces setbacks and surprises, encounters life and loss, and recalls what it felt like to be a "mixture of Forrest Gump and the Angel of Death."
Author Bio:
Friend of St. James Coffee, Evan “Sweet” Hansen, is a Rochester, MN native who found himself stumbling into the role of a suicide prevention and mental health advocate over the last several years.
After his adventure-based philanthropic, “Portage for a Purpose” campaign raised over $50,000 for the National Alliance on Mental Illness in Southeast Minnesota, he continued his journey in the form of storytelling. Once the original endeavor was over, Evan kept the adventure alive by participating in various speaking engagements across Minnesota and eventually preserving the story in his book, “Into the Wind.”
When he’s not working as a Peer Support Specialist for a local nonprofit, Evan enjoys planning domestic/international outdoor expeditions, studying a variety of theological perspectives, and snuggling up on the couch with his cat, Bear.
