Building resilient livestock systems through trees, diversity, and working landscapes
What if trees could act as infrastructure for livestock farming?
Join us for this farm tour, kindly hosted by Neidpath Farms, near Peebles, to explore how trees, hedgerows and wooded grazing areas can support productive livestock systems, through intentional woodland planting and existing woodland use, to enahnce livestock production rather than detract from it.
In recent years, Neidpath farms has seen the value in investing in the use of shelterbelts, hedges and woodland edges as living infrastructureāproviding natural shelter for livestock, improving soil stability, supporting biodiversity and providing medicinal benefits to livestock.
During this farm tour, led by Farm Manager Matt Griffin, we will explore:
- How trees and livestock can work symbiotically within the same system
- The role of shelter, shade and microclimate in supporting livestock welfare and performance
- Practical considerations when grazing livestock in wooded landscapes
- How woodlands can produce livestock, timber and other woodland outputs from the same land
- Considerations for woodland creation and additional enterprises
This event is designed for livestock farmers and land managers interested in integrating trees into productive farming systems and strengthening farm resilience.
During the event attendees will see first hand:
- How cattle through grazing planning have been integrated with existing woodlands
- Recent plantation and woodland creation schemes, incuding the farms new 'living shed' concept
- The estates resident woodland-pig enterprise,
- And the recent willow-copicing project, providing a low-cost alternative to sourcing and planting willow on the estate
Expect a practical, discussion-led farm walk with plenty of opportunity to share experiences and ask questions.
