Liverpool Sax Day returns in 2023 and is a must for ALL sax players!

The day long event features workshops, masterclasses, performances from International Sax Superstar Marius Neset plus the North's leading jazz tenorist/ educator Dean Masser.

Bring your sax and join in the ensemble classes hosted by prolific International sax expert and composer Andy Scott, and also peruse and try out all the latest sax models and paraphernalia at the many trade stalls.

Welcome to Liverpool Sax Day 2023 - all daytime events are held in the Cornerstone building - the evening Marius Neset Liverpool International Jazz Festival concert is in The Capstone Theatre 200 metres walk across the gardens.


10:00AM - 5:30PM - TRADE SHOW - Ground Floor, Cornerstone Building

On the ground floor of the Cornerstone you will be immediately greeted by the trade exhibition. 10:30AM - 11:45AM - ANDY SCOTT'S MASS SAX ENSEMBLE - Great Hall, First Floor, Cornerstone Building

Bring your sax and join in the fun! If you're not familiar with Andy Scott, he is the one of the UK's leading sax specialists/composers and chances are you've played some of his compositions out of popular music publications and examination grades. Multi nominated, British Composer Award winner, founder member of the Apollo Saxophone Quartet, Tutor of Saxophone at Royal Northern College of Music, the list goes on and on! Andy has prepared some great pieces for everyone to play during this ensemble class. You'll be able to play with many other sax enthusiasts and gain some useful technical hints from the great man himself. Suitable for ALL players, ALL levels (there will be simple and more advanced parts available)- bring your music stand!

12:00PM - 12:30PM - D'ADDARIO REED LECTURE - Great Hall, First Floor, Cornerstone Building

D'Addario's product specialist Lucy Aughton gives an informative talk about one of the oldest and prominent reed companies. From the first early production of Rico reeds in the late 1920s to this year's launch of the advanced synthetic VENN reeds.

Ever wonder exactly how your reed is made? D’Addario has created a presentation that demystifies the reeds we use on our mouthpieces. By detailing the history and anatomy of reeds, we hope that everyone will gain more understanding of what best suits their instrument, playing style, and playing level. We’ll discuss everything that goes into making a reed including materials, maintenance, longevity and everything in between’, production, design everything you need to know and more!

1:00PM - 2:30PM - MARIUS NESET MASTERCLASS - Warehouse Theatre, Ground Floor, Cornerstone Building

An up close and personal masterclass with Liverpool International Jazz Festival's headlining act, the critically acclaimed saxophonist and composer Marius Neset. Born in 1985 the Norwegian prodigy burst onto the international scene with his 2008 debut album as leader "Suite for the Seven Mountains". 2011's "Golden Xplosion" album release confirmed him as one of the most exciting and innovative masters of this era with rave reviews.

In this masterclass Marius talks about his approach to saxophone playing, performance, improvisation and so on, giving a useful insight prior to the evening's performance over in the Capstone Theatre. Suitable for ALL players (you do NOT need your instrument).

2:45PM - 4:00PM - ANDY SCOTT'S MASS SAX ENSEMBLE WITH RHYTHM SECTION - Great Hall, First Floor, Cornerstone Building

Bring your sax and join in the fun! The second Ensemble class of the day gives you the opportunity to perform Andy's compositions with a live rhythm section. Again, Andy will be directing and giving tips on various techniques throughout the class. Suitable for ALL players (there will be simple and more advanced parts available) - bring your music stand!

4:30PM - 5:30PM - DEAN MASSER QUARTET PERFORMANCE - Warehouse Theatre, Ground Floor, Cornerstone Building

To round off the afternoon's session the North's leading bop tenor master plays a blistering set with his quartet.

After graduating from Leeds College of Music, Dean Masser became a member of the Jack Parnell Quartet, which recorded a live album during a week-long stint at Ronnie Scott’s. Since then, Dean has played alongside many of the leading names in British jazz at numerous venues and festivals. He has many television and radio appearances to his credit, and released his first album as leader in 2010.

7:30PM - 10:00PM - MARIUS NESET QUARTET, LIVERPOOL INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL - The Capstone Theatre

Born in Bergen in 1985, the Norwegian saxophonist and composer Marius Neset studied at Berklee College of Music, in Boston, during the summer of 2002 before enrolling at the Rhythmic Music Conservatory, in Copenhagen, from which he received an Advanced Postgraduate Diploma in Music in 2010.

He has earned countless nominations and awards for his performances and recordings, including the Spellemannprisen, in Norway, for the album Lion in 2014, and an ECHO award, in Germany, for the album Snowmelt in 2017. The 2017 edition of the Downbeat magazine listed him as the only European jazz musician in their list of ’25 artists to watch’.

Marius has performed with jazz musicians all over the world, including Django Bates and his bands StoRMChaser and Human Chain, JazzKamikaze, Trondheim Jazz Orchestra, E.S.T. Symphony, Latvia Radio Big Band, Danish Radio Big Band, Arild Andersen, Marcus Miller, Chick Corea, Ivo Neame, Jim Hart, Petter Eldh, Lionel Loueke, and Anton Eger, as well as his own band, often presenting his own works.

He has appeared at prestigious venues such as the Kongsberg, Vossajazz, Molde and Bergen International Jazz Festivals in Norway, the North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands,, Elbphilharmonie and Philharmonie Köln in Germany, St. Luke’s, Queen Elizabeth, Wigmore Hall, and Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London, Montreal Jazz Festival, San Francisco and Rochester Jazz Festivals in the USA, Pori Jazz Festival in Finland, and the London Jazz Festival.

His large discography includes nearly a dozen solo albums, and he is increasingly in demand as a composer of works for the concert hall; these range over a wide spectrum of performing forces, many featuring the saxophone in a soloistic function. Marius has received composition commissions from the NRK in Norway, the Danish Radio in Denmark, Köln Music for the Kölner Philharmonie in Germany, the BBC in the United Kingdom, and many more.

He performed and recorded several times with the London Sinfonietta and performed with the Oslo Sinfonietta, Philharmonisches Staatsorchester Hamburg, Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra, Staatsorchester Rheinische Philharmonie, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra,, Bayerische Kammerphilharmonie, Tapiola Sinfonietta, Orchestre national de Belgique, Basel Sinfonietta, Norwegian Radio O:rchestra, Stavanger Symphony Orchestra, and, most notably, the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Edward Gardner.

Marius Neset has also worked with classical musicians such as Leif Ove Andsnes, Andreas Brantelid, Michala Petri, Ole Edvard Antonsen, Louisa Tuck, Ingrid Neset, and the Vertavo String Quartet.
