What will cities of the future look like? Architect Robert Heineman, FAIA, will share his insights from his work on the development of The Woodlands, Texas, one of the nation’s most influential master-planned cities.
Founded by oilman George P. Mitchell, The Woodlands was considered a bold concept when first conceived in the 1970s. Today, it is home to more than 118,000 residents, nearly 2,200 businesses, and multiple Fortune 500 headquarters. The 28,000 acre master plan is located less than 30 miles from Houston and blends small town charm, natural environments, and metropolitan scale amenities.
Heineman’s career in The Woodlands began in 1971, while he was working on a master’s degree. He collaborated with renowned environmental planner Ian McHarg.  A year later, after earning a Master of Architecture degree in Urban Design from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, Heineman joined the project full time.

Heineman later served as Vice President of Planning & Design for The Howard Hughes Corporation, continuing to work on The Woodlands.
One of his most enduring contributions is the 1972 conceptual diagram that ultimately became The Woodlands Waterway, a landscaped linear park and mixed use region that was completed in 2018.
The Woodlands history states, “Prior to the opening of The Woodlands, a drainage ditch was conceptualized into a future waterway. It began with a simple “napkin sketch” diagram depicting a transit corridor through the heart of The Woodlands Town Center. Today, The Woodlands Waterway is a landscaped, 1.8-mile water feature and transportation corridor, linking urban residential living to shopping, business, dining and entertainment venues in Town Center.”
Currently retired from his executive role at the Howard Hughes Corporation, he continues to serve as a consultant and remains actively involved. During his tenure, The Woodlands earned global recognition for innovative planning and environmentally conscious design. Heineman’s contributions have been honored with numerous awards. He and his wife, Pamela, are longtime residents of The Woodlands.
The event is free, thanks to the Doris Becker Lecture Series in conjunction with the Hagen History Center.
Education: Heineman received his Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Architecture degrees, magna cum laude, from Rice University in 1969, and his Master of Architecture in Urban Design from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design in 1972. He became a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects in 2009.
