Kevin Black, CEO, U Can Fly Holdings

With a resume that reads like the Top 100 Chart in the Hip-Hop, R&B and Pop genres, veteran music executive Kevin Black has contributed to the success of countless recording artists.

Household names like Madonna, Linkin Park, Eminem, Gwen Stefani, Black Eyed Peas, Mary J. Blige, Keyshia Cole, Prince, Marilyn Manson and Cher all can credit part of their success

and careers to the efforts of Bronx-native Kevin Black. Citing multi-platinum status with over a billion dollars in combined revenue, record labels and artist

(both major and independent, alike) have relied on Kevin Black’s expertise, vision, tenacity, and drive to take their careers to the next level.

After an honorable discharge from the Marine Corps., Black started his career as a roadie and eventual tour manager for the pioneering rap group Run DMC, Black quickly made a name for himself through out the industry as the ‘go-to-guy.’ Traveling the world with the legends of rap afforded Black the ability to segue in to the on-air radio personality field as one of the hottest DJs and mixers on the west coast in the mid-eighties on KJLH-FM.

Always on the cusp and able to recognize the next phenomenon before it hit the masses, Black was hired as the National Promotions Director at Death Row Records. A marketing and promotional whiz, Black designed award-winning promotional campaigns for new artists that garnered more than $100 million in revenue, orchestrated national tours and dozens of music videos that further heightened the visibility of Death Row’s roster to the world-wide audience. Under Black’s reign he managed 68 employees and acted as the media liaison all while managing a $5 million annual budget. Black is also credited as one of the forefathers of the “Street Team” department in the music industry; still widely used by all record labels today. Initially hiring, training and directing 60 “street promoters” this model of grass roots promotion is at the core of any successful awareness campaign.

After his stint at Death Row and a subsequent position at EMI Records, Black worked with world champion basketball great Shaquille O’Neil’s newly-formed T.W.I.S.M. (The World Is Mine) Records as Senior Vice President. With an ear for talent and the keen ability to envision the big picture, Black used his contacts in the industry to cultivate and secure brand partnerships for the optimum exposure of the new joint venture with A&M Records. With a roster of artists that included Shaquille O’Neil and Ice Cube, again Black’s marketing expertise and savvy promotional campaigns garnered the new label an impressive first year with 3.5 million units sold.

Never one to shy away from a challenge, early in 2001 Black was now on the verge of creating one of the most powerful modern-day entities in record label history. During Black’s tenure as Vice President of Interscope’s Rap Department the label generated more than $600 million in annual revenues…consistently. From its infancy, Interscope’s Rap Department under Black’s direction cultivated and expanded the brand awareness of artists like Eminem, 50 Cent, Black Eyed Peas, The Game and Gwen Stefani. Interscope’s Rap Department secured positions at the top of Billboard’s charts, numerous RIAA gold and platinum certifications, heavy rotation on radio and on video networks. Supervising and managing 40 national employees, Black’s team promoted 182 records that sold more than 120 million copies.

During his time at Interscope Records, Black also threw his hat in the political ring on the marketing side. As co-founder of the “Vote of Die” initiative with Sean “P. Diddy” Combs, Black helped to secure the endorsements of recording artists Mary J.Blige, Mariah Carey and 50 Cent as they encouraged young voters to exercise their right to vote.

After his 5 years at Interscope Records, Black was offered a high-ranking executive position in the Chairman’s office at Warner Bros. Records. Brought in to manage a $20 million annual budget and supervise 50 national employees, Black quickly executed strategies to drive world-wide exposure, increase label and brand awareness while increasing revenue for the Warner Urban Music Division. While at WMG, Black conceptualized and implemented national awareness campaigns for artists like Linkin Park, Eric Beet, Madonna and Cher that spurred a 15% spike in sales despite a negative economic sales climate.

Now as the captain of his ship in 2008 Kevin Black opened his own company under the shingle, U CAN FLY HOLDINGS. As CEO and President, Black is poised to take branding, strategic marketing and promotions to the next level. Whether the product or campaign is urban or mainstream targeted, U CAN FLY HOLDINGS is your next course of action.
