Coming LIVE to the Art House: Local bands Tug & The Heart Strings + Alder Street!
Tug and the Heart Strings formed in 2015 during the late-night hours of the Oregon Country Fair, built around a simple goal: to create an acoustic project that could easily adapt to whatever impromptu opportunities might arise while wandering the Fairgrounds.
The three guitarists and drummer who make up the founding members had been playing together in various rock bands since childhood, including Dan Mahoney and Swan Burton’s longtime Eugene project, Bazil Rathbone. Behind the scenes, however, the three guitarists (Eric Rowen, Nick Rivard and Dan Mahoney) had also dedicated many years to studying jazz and classical guitar, preparing them to step fully outside their typical rock band format and begin creating the music that would shape the sound of Tug and the Heart Strings.
The group has continued to play consistently and expand both its sound and lineup far beyond its initial format, including the addition of Aaron Nelson on upright bass in 2022. In addition to performing at venues and festivals across Oregon, the band is currently focusing more energy on writing and recording original material. They still return to the Country Fair each year to perform unplugged sets reminiscent of the late-night sessions that sparked the band’s formation in 2015.
A five-piece string band with tasty percussion, Alder Street crafted their bluegrass-rock fusion over fifteen years of busking, club tours, private events and festival stages. Dynamic sets of original tunes, traditional bluegrass and classic rock covers are packed with vibrant solos, versatile songwriting, alternating lead vocals and layered harmonies. Intimate bluegrass tunes, soulful R&B, up-tempo funk, boot-stomping alt country, and rock classics get a newgrass twist that brings crowds to their feet up and down the west coast, from Alaska to San Diego. Their fourth album, Where the Flowers Used to Be (2023), adds to the groups 34,000+ Spotify listens by fans concentrated on the west coast, Chicago, and Europe. Book now, let the party begin!
