About this Event
Fiction can be a strange mirror of our times, and acclaimed author Teddy Wayne—whose work explores capitalism, alienation, and masculinity—highlights some of the strangest strains of our current political turmoil in his new novel The Great Man Theory. Paul is a recently demoted adjunct instructor of freshman comp, a divorced but devoted Brooklyn dad, and a self-described “curmudgeonly crank” cataloging his bitterness toward the priorities of modern life in a polemic he’s calling The Luddite Manifesto. Outraged by the authoritarian creeps ruining the country, he is determined to better the future for his young daughter, one aggrieved lecture at a time—but shockingly, others in his life aren’t very receptive to Paul’s scoldings. As Paul endures one indignity after the next, he concocts a dramatic plan to right the world’s wrongs and give himself a more significant place in it. Wayne is joined by award-winning author, journalist, and public speaker Susannah Cahalan for a reading and conversation graphing America's cultural landscape through the lens of his "wise...grimly funny...dyspeptic satire of the Trump years" (Esquire).
