A Night of Warm Tenor, Timeless Swing & Pure Jazz Conversation
“You don’t choose Jazz, Jazz chooses you.” — Benn Clatworthy
Benn Clatworthy: Saxophone
Alex Hutton: Piano
Simon Thorpe: Double Bass
Matt Home: Drums
I am quietly delighted to welcome back one of our most endearing and, yes, occasionally controversial saxophonists to Twickenham Jazz Club…
Fresh from his hometown of Los Angeles, his Boxers studio, and an impressive international tour, Benn Clatworthy never disappoints. He leaves us inspired, stimulated, and often still thinking long after the final note has faded.
Grandson of the late, great actress Gertrude Lawrence, Benn carries both heritage and independence in equal measure. He is a deeply respected figure on the jazz scene, bringing to our stage a tenor sound that is warm, lyrical and beautifully centred. His playing nods to the great melodic masters, the breath-soaked elegance of Stan Getz, the searching depth of Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane, the soulful clarity of Horace Silver, the relaxed authority of Dexter Gordon, yet his voice is unmistakably his own.
Thoughtful. Swinging. Rich with feeling.
Every phrase shaped with clarity, intention and deep musical understanding.
Many years ago, in what I now recognise as a rather naïve moment, I asked Benn, “Why did you choose Jazz?”
He looked at me quite directly and replied, “You don’t choose Jazz, Jazz chooses you.”
I learnt a lesson that night.
This will be a genuine musical conversation, supported by an equally accomplished rhythm section: the supremely gifted Alex Hutton on piano, Simon Thorpe on double bass, and Matt Home on drums.
Expect warmth. Expect swing. Expect depth. An evening of brilliant, interesting and uplifting, heartfelt jazz.
We very much hope that you can join us. 🎷✨
