Featuring Kevin Baker & Andy McCullough
Tickets: $10, $45, & $80
Created and hosted by writers Patrick Sauer and David J. Roth, Squawkin’ Sports is an ongoing series featuring book chats with grown-up authors writing about grown-ups playing kiddie games. This month, Squawkin' Sports is hosting a special in-person event at Die Stammkneipe Brooklyn (710 Fulton St.). Sauer and Roth chat with Kevin Baker, author of The New York Game: Baseball and the Rise of a New City, and Andy McCullough, author of The Last of His Kind: Clayton Kershaw and the Burden of Greatness.

The New York Game by Kevin Baker is a hugely entertaining history of baseball and New York City, bursting with larger-than-life figures and fascinating stories from the game’s beginnings to the end of World War II. With nuance and depth, historian Kevin Baker brings this all vividly back to life: the still-controversial, indelible moments—Did the Babe call his shot? Did they fix the 1919 World Series? Here are all the legendary players, managers, and owners, in all their vivid, complicated humanity, on and off the field. The New York Game is a riveting, rollicking, brilliant ode to America’s beloved pastime and to its indomitable city of origin.
Bestselling author and current senior writer at The Athletic discusses The Last of His Kind, the definitive biography of Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw, based on exclusive interviews with Kershaw and more than 200 others, examining the genesis of his brilliance, his epic quest to win the World Series, and his singular place within the evolving baseball landscape. The Last of His Kind traces Kershaw’s path from a boyhood fractured by divorce to his development as one of the most-heralded pitching prospects in Texas history to his emergence in Los Angeles as the spiritual heir to Sandy Koufax. But the book also charts Kershaw’s place in baseball’s changing landscape. To understand how baseball is played today, and how it got that way, you must understand the journey of Clayton Kershaw.
Ticket options:
$10: 1 drink
$45: 1 drink + 1 copy of The New York Game: Baseball and the Rise of a New City
$45: 1 drink + 1 copy of The Last of His Kind: Clayton Kershaw and the Burden of Greatness
$80: 1 drink + 1 copy of both books
