Create your own altar at the Ofrenda Workshop in Granville Island. A family-friendly Día de los Muertos tradition of remembrance.
About this Event

One of the most meaningful traditions of Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is the ofrenda—an altar created to honor loved ones who have passed away. This hands-on workshop invites participants to design and build their own miniature ofrendas (altars) using craft materials, symbolic objects, and even personal photos.

As you build, you will learn about the essential elements of an ofrenda—candles, marigolds, food, photos, papel picado—and their spiritual and emotional significance. Through this activity, participants will gain a deeper appreciation of how different cultures remember and celebrate their ancestors.

What You’ll Learn
  • The history and meaning of ofrendas in Día de los Muertos
  • Symbolism of candles, flowers, food, photos, and papel picado
  • How to create your own miniature altar to take home
  • The importance of remembrance and tradition in Mexican culture

Who Can Join?

This workshop is family-friendly and open to all ages. It is perfect for anyone wanting to connect with Mexican heritage while exploring creativity and meaningful traditions.
