In this full-day workshop, Professor Sarah Powell (USA) will focus on two important literacy topics in mathematics. First, she will discuss mathematics vocabulary and how to help students learn the formal language of mathematics. Several strategies that can be used to help students learn mathematics vocabulary will be reviewed.
The focus will then shift to mathematics word problems. Ineffective practices (e.g., tying keywords to operations) and the reasons these are ineffective will be discussed. Time will then be spent on two effective practices – the use of a word-problem attack strategy and the provision of help to students so that they can understand the underlying schemas of word problems.
By the end of the workshop, participants will have the confidence to support the mathematics vocabulary and word-problem solving development of the students they work with.
?️ Sarah Powell is a Professor in the College of Education at The University of Texas at Austin and Associate Director of the Meadows Center for Preventing Educational Risk. Her research, teaching, and service focus on mathematics, particularly for students who have difficulty learning mathematics.
Sarah is currently involved in several research projects including studies related to word-problem solving, fractions, mathematics disorders and mathematics vocabulary. She believes that with appropriately designed and delivered instruction, almost all students can become successful and confident mathematicians.
