About this Event

SWANA stands for South West Asia and North Africa, a term that highlights the rich musical and cultural traditions of countries across the region. Featured artist Radwan Ghazi Moumneh will share tracks from artists he’s collaborated with or loves, shine a light on emerging musicians, and provide context to place each piece in its musical and cultural landscape. Expect a laid-back, morning-show vibe, and maybe even some very special coffee.

This event is co-presented with the MENA Film Festival.

Presented by Barking Sphinx as part of the Unwritten Weekend festival.

Radwan Ghazi Moumneh is a Lebanese-Canadian musician and producer based in Tiohtiá:ke/Montréal. He blends Arabic song traditions with electroacoustic buzuq (Lebanese lute) and electronics to create music that reimagines contemporary Arabic sound and culture.

Moumneh is currently working on his debut solo album, and tonight’s performance marks the Vancouver premiere of this new solo work.

In the early 2010s, he founded the multimedia project Jerusalem In My Heart (JIMH), which has toured internationally and released four acclaimed albums on Constellation Records. For JIMH, Moumneh composes all the music and collaborates with a filmmaker—most recently Erin Weisgerber. Their 2021 album Qalaq features artists such as Moor Mother, Tim Hecker, Lucrecia Dalt, and Greg Fox; framed by Moumneh’s spoken and sung Arabic, buzuq, and sound design, Qalaq is a visceral and haunting work of contemporary electronics, Arabic songcraft, and sound art. JIMH has been a guest curator at Le Guess Who? and has appeared at Big Ears, Rewire, and FIMAV among many other avant-garde music festivals.

Outside of JIMH, Moumneh has contributed to many collaborative recordings and regularly composes for film and dance. He also co-founded the legendary Hotel2Tango studio in 2006, where he has produced and recorded over 200 albums.
