About this Event
Easy does it with Lighten Up!! The evening will see works by Antonio Fini, Claire Porter, Henning Rübsam, Margo Sappington, Bradley Shelver, and dance pioneers Beverly Blossom and Helen Tamiris. Two performances, April 15 & 16 at the Theater at St. Jean, 150 W. 76th St. (take the stairs down behind the church on the corner, or the elevator on Lexington between 75th & 76th Streets).
By Beverly Blossom, famed dancer/comedienne, is "Shards," a mesmerizing duet with a mannequin and dancer Henning Rübsam, leading member of Blossom's company. Henning will also appear in his own choreography to Hildegard Knef singing Cole Porter's I've Got You Under My Skin (in German) premiered by Rübsam at the Dissidance Festival in Corsica, France, last summer.
Helen Tamiris, modern dance pioneer, will be represented by her "Skater's Ballet" from the 1945 Broadway musical, reproduced in the 1948 movie Up in Central Park. The charming dance for 16 has been reproduced by Elizabeth McPherson and will be danced by the Montclair State Dance Ensemble.
Valentina Kozlova, former principal dancer with the Bolshoi Ballet and New York City Ballet, will be joined by Andrei Jouravlev for "The Man I Love" duet from Margo Sappington's "Don't Bring Lulu." Also by Sappington are excerpts from her "For Ella," a suite of delights inspired by songs sung by the great Ella Fitzgerald, danced by members of the Joffrey Ballet School NY.
Antonio Fini, former Martha Graham Dance Company member, will perform his energetic solo "Gym-me," a takeoff on a character Jimmy who carries fitness training way too far.
Acclaimed dancer/comedienne/Guggenheim fellow/teacher Claire Porter will perform her witty "Sentenced to Sentences," a solo of a writer in a brainstorm becoming the sentence she writes.
The Joffrey Concert Group, under the artistic direction of Bradley Shelver, will present Shelver's outrageous "3114" for 17 dancers, set to Ravel's Bolero. 3114 explores the Neanderthal in us all, asking the question how much have we evolved as a species??
