About this Event

Light & Shadow Painting Workshop: Creating Dramatic Landscapes in Acrylic

2-Day Intensive | March

“The substance of painting is light.” André Derain

Light is what gives a landscape its mood, its depth, and its emotional pull. In this immersive 2-Day acrylic painting workshop, you’ll learn how to harness light and shadow to create landscapes that feel powerful, atmospheric, and alive.

This workshop is designed for painters who want to move beyond simply recording what they see and instead paint what they feel. You will use contrast, value, and colour temperature to heighten drama and guide the viewer’s eye. Through guided demonstrations, hands-on exercises, and individual feedback, we’ll explore how light shapes form, creates movement, and transforms ordinary scenes into compelling works of art.

What You’ll Learn
  • How to see and simplify light and shadow in the landscape
  • Using value contrast to create depth, focus, and atmosphere
  • Controlling edges to enhance mood and realism
  • Colour temperature, warm light versus cool shadow
  • Compositional strategies that amplify drama and storytelling
  • How to loosen up while maintaining structure and intention

What to Expect
  • Step-by-step demonstrations in acrylic
  • Guided painting sessions with personalized feedback
  • Practical tools you can apply to future paintings
  • A supportive, inspiring studio environment

You’ll leave the workshop with a stronger understanding of how light works in landscape painting, and the confidence to use it boldly to express mood, emotion, and place.

Who This Workshop Is For

This workshop is ideal for beginner-to-intermediate painters, as well as more experienced artists looking to deepen their understanding of light, shadow, and dramatic composition. A basic familiarity with acrylic paint is recommended.

Whether you’re inspired by glowing skies, dramatic coastlines, or shifting light across land, this workshop will help you see differently and paint with greater intention and impact.
