About this Event
This session of Life with Celiac Disease focuses on identifying and managing risk when dinging outside of the home. In this session attendees will get a rare behind the scenes look at the restaurant industry to help understand what they should and should not be concerned with while dining out, the questions to ask, and steps to take to ensure safe dining. It is led by pastry chef, restaurant owner and celiac diease patient Alyssa Gangeri and celiac disease specialized dietitian Joanna Perl, RD.
Joanna is the celiac dietitian at Vanderbilt’s Center for Human Nutrition where she counsels patients on the transition to the gluten free diet and the more challenging aspects of the lifestyle, including how to safely dine out. Before getting her master’s in nutrition, Joanna’s career was centered in the hospitality industry. She attended culinary school at the Natural Gourmet Institute for Food and Health followed by 13 years as manager and hospitality consultant in NYC. In between, she ran her own mail-order baking business giving her additional insights into the safety and labeling practices of small businesses. She has specialized in celiac care at Columbia University and Vanderbilt University since January 2022.
Life with Celiac Disease is a series of virtual educational seminars geared towards people and families living with celiac disease. Each lecture features a guest lecturer who is an experts in either clinical treatment, mental health or life skills coaching related to celiac disease.
The seminars are correlated but independent of one another, providing value for patients who chose not to attend all sessions.
Registration is donation based with no minimum donation required. Funds raised through this seminar go towards important programs like this one for celiac patients at Vanderbilt Health.
