NlWat gebeurt er met het lichaam als instorting geen uitzondering meer is, maar een permanente toestand? Choreograaf Leu Wijee onderzoekt de impact van natuurrampen op het dagelijks leven, en hoe lichamen en landschappen omgaan met schokken, herinnering en vernieuwing. Wijee groeide op in Indonesië, een land dat steeds zwaarder wordt getroffen door de stijgende zeespiegel en de opwarming van de aarde. Zijn geboortedorp in Centraal-Sulawesi werd in 2018 verwoest door een aardbeving en een grondverzakking. Een ontmoeting met dansartieste Mio Ishida, met wie hij RIDDEN maakte, gaf zijn onderzoek een nieuwe richting. Zij verkent in haar praktijk de relatie tussen lichamen, objecten en de stedelijke landschappen van Tokio en Chigasaki. Vijf performers laten zich inspireren door persoonlijke ervaringen en verhalen verzameld in Japan en Indonesië. Via zweet en uithoudingsvermogen ontwikkelen hun lichamen een magnetische kracht en worden ze levende getuigen van overstromingen en seismische breuken. Ze creëren een hypnotiserende, ritmische choreografie die het publiek in een meditatieve en tegelijk explosieve staat brengt. RIDDEN, dit jaar voor het eerst te zien in Europa, houdt het midden tussen dans, ritueel, sportieve en muzikale performance. Een ecologische reflectie op de absurditeit van een permanente overlevingsstrijd.

Qu’arrive-t-il au corps quand l’effondrement n’est plus une exception, mais un état permanent ? Leu Wijee étudie depuis plusieurs années la vie quotidienne dans des lieux frappés par des catastrophes naturelles, observant les environnements et les corps, et leur capacité à absorber les chocs, les souvenirs et le renouveau. Le chorégraphe est originaire d’Indonésie, pays gravement touché par l’élévation du niveau de la mer et le réchauffement climatique. Sa ville natale, dans le Sulawesi central, a été dévastée en 2018 par un séisme et la liquéfaction du sol.
Ses recherches ont pris de l’ampleur suite à sa rencontre avec l’artiste et danseuse Mio Ishida, qui explore dans sa pratique les corps, les objets et les paysages qui l’entourent à Tokyo et Chigasaki. Ensemble, iels ont créé RIDDEN. Se basant sur leurs propres expériences et des récits personnels collectés au Japon et en Indonésie, cinq interprètes se font les témoignages vivants de tsunamis et de ruptures sismiques.
Leur chorégraphie déploie une énergie magnétique, faite de sueur et de ténacité, qui plonge le public dans un état à la fois méditatif et explosif. Présenté cette année pour la première fois en Europe, RIDDEN balance entre danse, rituel, performance physique et concert, et livre une réflexion écologique sur l’absurdité d’une survie perpétuelle.

What happens to the body when collapse becomes a condition rather than an exception? For years, choreographer Leu Wijee has researched everyday life of places in the aftermath of natural disasters, observing how bodies and environments absorb shock, memory, and renewal. Wijee is from Indonesia, a country increasingly affected by rising sea levels and the impact of human-caused global warming. His hometown in Central Sulawesi was devastated and reshaped by a 2018 earthquake and ground liquefaction.This research expanded through an encounter with dance artist Mio Ishida, whose practice explores bodies, objects, and the landscapes she inhabits in Tokyo and Chigasaki. Together, they created RIDDEN. Drawing on their lived experiences and personal accounts collected across Japan and Indonesia, five performers generate a magnetic force through sweat and endurance. Over the course of an hour, their bodies become a living testimony to inundation and seismic rupture.They unfold a hypnotic, rhythm-driven choreography that transports the audience into a state at once meditative and explosive. Presented this year for the first time in Europe, RIDDEN swings between dance, ritual, sport, and band performance, sharing an ecological reflection on the absurdity of perpetual survival.
