About this Event
Join authors and mathematicians Sarah Hart and Rob Eastaway, in conversation with Dr Becky Fisher, CEO of the English Association, for a practical workshop sharing tips and tricks for connecting poetry and maths.
“It is impossible to be a mathematician without being a poet in soul … the poet must see what others do not see, must see more deeply …. And the mathematician must do the same.”
Russian mathematician, Sofia Kovalevskaya
In this workshop, we’ll explore the connections between poetry and maths, from the mathematical structures of ancient Indian poems to the ‘good tripping measure’ of Shakespeare’s verse. We’ll equip you with ideas for classroom activities to celebrate National Poetry Day that bring joy to both the English and Maths classroom.

Educated at Oxford and Manchester, Professor Hart is the 33rd person and first ever woman to hold the prestigious Gresham Professorship of Geometry, the oldest Mathematics Chair in the UK.
