About this Event
Los Angeles City Council District 13, Office of Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martínez, is proud to partner with the Barnsdall Gallery Theatre and Department of Cultural Affairs to present "Lens on Life" – a new monthly film screening series, to be held on the third Wednesday of every month, in the beautiful 300-seat Barnsdall Gallery Theatre.
Each month, we will partner with an organization doing work in our district, to curate a selection of short and feature length films, of varying lengths and genres, each highlighting one critical issue affecting our communities, or value that represents our Los Angeles. After each screening, we will host an intimate conversation with an expert or experts of the films shown, and/or the particular subject matter covered by the film.
This will be an opportunity to connect with people in our community through art and film, in the city that has historically been the global center of filmmaking, and only paces away from Frank Lloyd Wright’s famous Hollyhock House, Los Angeles’s only UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Wednesday February 18, 2026 - Selma
This month, we will be teaming up with the Los Angeles chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) on Wedneday, February 18, 2026, for a very special screening of Selma - director Ava Duvernay's award-winning drama highlighting the historic Selma to Montgomery voting rights marches in 1965, led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and John Lewis, among others.
This month's screening will focus on racial justice and voting rights - a key topic of the film and an important subject in today's political climate. The NAACP Los Angeles will provide resources for attendees before the screening, and information on how to get involved in the movement for racial justice. They will also be registering attendees to vote, for those who are not already registered.
Following the film, we will host a conversation about the themes of the film, and how we can meet the challenges of today's political climate with non-violent direct action and a focus on voting rights.
Panelists and moderator TBA.
