Valley Pride, Acadia Equity, the ASU's SHRC, and Dalhousie Legal Aid are working together to bring you a legal name change and gender marker change clinic! We encourage everyone to order a free ticket to ensure your spot, but we will also take walk-ins as time allows.
In Nova Scotia, you can have your gender marker updated to F, M, or X, or you can have your ID document updated to not reflect any gender marker. If you are applying to change your name, you also need to get your fingerprints taken by RCMP or Commissionaires.
Eligibility:
- 16 years and older
- born in Nova Scotia OR lived in NS for at least 3 months immediately before applying to change your name/gender indicator
- able to provide: most recent birth certificate (if born in Canada) OR immigration documents (if born outside of Canada)
Cost (to be paid when forms are submitted to Vital Statistics - no payment at this legal clinic)
- Gender marker change: Your first update is free. Any further amendments cost $24.95.
- Name change: $165.70
It takes 3-5 months for Vital Statistics to process these forms and issue updated documents.
