🧠Lecture: "The Hidden (and Not So Hidden) World of Sexual Diversity Across Species"
🎤 Speaker: Dr. Thomas Sanger
Join us for a fascinating evening as Dr. Thomas Sanger explores the remarkable diversity of sex and sexual traits across the animal kingdom, including humans. Bridging developmental and evolutionary biology, Dr. Sanger will examine how sex is formed, expressed, and varied in nature—and why these realities are far more complex than the simplified binaries found in textbooks and public discourse.
Through vivid examples from many species, he will highlight the spectacular spectrum of sexual traits and explain how they emerge through dynamic developmental processes. Dr. Sanger will also address why discussing the biological basis of sex is uniquely challenging, even for scientists, and what is at stake when science and societal narratives clash.
Dr. Sanger is an associate professor of biology at Loyola University Chicago. His research investigates how a single cell becomes a fully formed organism, and how changes in these developmental processes generate the rich diversity of animal life.
