🧠Lecture: How Black Representation in Media Shapes Power & Belonging
🎙️ Speaker: Dr. Tiffany E. Barber
From blockbuster films and museum walls to viral TikToks and campaign ads, Black representation is everywhere—but visibility alone does not guarantee equity, dignity, or power. In this lecture, Dr. Tiffany E. Barber explores how images of Blackness circulate and shape the ways we understand race, gender, beauty, citizenship, and belonging in contemporary culture.
Why are certain images of Black life celebrated while others are ignored or erased? Who benefits when Black visibility increases? How do images influence public memory, political movements, and everyday assumptions about identity? Through accessible examples and sharp cultural analysis, this talk challenges the idea that “more representation” is automatically progressive. Instead, Dr. Barber invites audiences to think critically about how images can reinforce stereotypes, commodify difference, inspire solidarity, and open space for new forms of Black expression and freedom.
Dr. Tiffany E. Barber is an award-winning scholar, curator, and critic, and Assistant Professor of African American Art at UCLA. Her work across museums, media, and academia reshapes how we understand race, gender, and representation in contemporary visual culture.
