What’s out there beyond our solar system—and how do we even know?
Join Dr. Saugata Barat for a journey from the familiar planets we know to the strange and surprising worlds orbiting distant stars. We’ll start close to home, exploring the quirks and extremes of our own solar system, before expanding outward to the incredible diversity of exoplanets across the galaxy.
Learn how planets form and evolve, how astronomers detect worlds light-years away, and how telescopes like the James Webb Space Telescope can “sniff” alien atmospheres. From hazy, heavy skies on small planets to dramatic differences between young and mature worlds, this talk reveals what these distant atmospheres can teach us about planetary origins—and maybe even life beyond Earth.
Dr. Saugata Barat is a postdoctoral associate at MIT and an observational exoplanet researcher specializing in atmospheric characterization of young exoplanets. He earned his PhD from the Anton Pannekoek Institute for Astronomy in Amsterdam and brings a passion for making complex space science engaging and accessible.
