🧠Lecture: "Bat Wings & Their Peculiar Shapes: An Evolutionary Study"
🎤 Speaker: MSc. Stefania Briones
Join us for a fascinating evening as bat biologist Stefania Briones takes us into the world of bat wings, evolution, and the strange ways species learn to share space. Focusing on bats in the Miniopterus genus across Africa and Madagascar, Stefania will explore how closely related species manage to coexist in the same ecosystems without competing themselves out of a home.
Using morphometrics and phylogenetic tools, this lecture asks: are these bats morphologically distinct enough to carve out their own ecological niches, or are they more like awkwardly similar roommates doing their best to avoid conflict? Along the way, you’ll also learn about bat biology more broadly, including some of the bat species you can find right here in Illinois.
Stefania Briones is a Guatemalan bat biologist who has been studying and working with bats for over 15 years. She is currently a scientific affiliate at the Field Museum of Natural History, and her work on African bat species examines how a particular bat family evolved such a unique wing structure.
