Things that go bump in the night were a specialty on The X-Files—genetic mutants, zombies, chupacabra, sea monsters, witches, and countless others. The series redefined horror on network television by blending folklore, psychology, and slow-burn suspense.
In this engaging talk, JR Pepper will dive into the origins of the show’s iconic “Monster of the Week” episodes, exploring the myths, urban legends, scientific anomalies, and cultural anxieties that inspired them. Along the way, we’ll consider how these creatures shaped the identity of The X-Files and pushed the boundaries of what TV could show—and suggest.
JR Pepper is an adjunct professor of art history at CUNY Brooklyn College, a freelance lecturer, photographer, and self-described “professional eccentric.” Recognized for her work in spirit photography, she has been featured in Haunted America: FAQ, Vice.com, and Musee Magazine, and is a regular lecturer with The Dead Ladies, Brooklyn Brainery, and the Long Island Convention of Horror. She is also a Green-Wood Cemetery tour guide and the author-photographer of Buried Boston and Buried New Orleans.
