🧠Lecture: "The 1960s, The Monkees, and the Counterculture Era"
🎤 Speaker: Dr. Tom Rizzuto
Join us for an eye-opening evening as Dr. Tom Rizzuto uncovers the surprising role The Monkees played in the turbulent 1960s. Though marketed as a clean-cut, made-for-TV band for kids, The Monkees moved in a remarkably subversive circle that placed them at the heart of major cultural shifts.
This lecture reveals the hidden side of the group: their entanglement with the darker corners of the music industry, their pioneering role in the evolution of music videos, and their unexpected connection to the groundbreaking film Easy Rider. You’ll gain a deeper understanding of how a seemingly manufactured pop act became intertwined with the counterculture era.
Dr. Tom Rizzuto is a professor of music history, guitar, and media at Molloy University and SUNY Old Westbury. With advanced degrees in music education, musicology, and Educational Leadership, his work explores how music both shapes and reflects cultural change. His research has been featured in Discovery Magazine, History Magazine, Arts Education Policy Review, and on the Rock and Roll Archaeology podcast.
