🧠Lecture: "Math in the Movies"
🎤 Speaker: Educator and Lecturer Bette Sloane
Join us for a fascinating evening as Educator and Lecturer Bette Sloane reveals the many roles mathematics plays in cinema—both in front of and behind the camera. We’ll explore films where math drives the storyline, delve into biopics of famous (and infamous) mathematicians, and uncover how mathematical concepts become pivotal plot devices. We’ll also peek behind the scenes at the math that powers filmmaking techniques—and take a closer look at those cinematic moments when the numbers just don’t add up.
Bette Sloane is a 19-year veteran high school and collegiate math educator with a rich background in the arts and a deep passion for art history. She holds a BFA in Photography, an MA in Mathematics Education, and an EdM in Curriculum & Teaching from Columbia University’s Teachers College. Recognized by the U.S. Department of Education for her interdisciplinary contributions and awarded multiple international fellowship grants, she was most recently selected as a NYS Master Teacher by Governor Hochul.
