An animated vision of a city thousands of miles away and hundreds of years ago dances across six digital screens, evoking the historical form of the "rakuchū-rakugai zu" folding screens—scenes in and around the capital—that flourished in Edo period Japan (1603–1868). Seasons change, fires erupt, weather shifts, and festivals appear, all in relation to the real-time world. But why digitize and animate these remote cityscapes and connect them to the immediate present? This lecture will explore the background behind teamLab's "The World of Irreversible Change," positioning the piece within the Japanese contemporary art scene, the history of technology-based artistic experiments in Japan and abroad, and rhetorics of chance and change in Japanese art.Ticket Price: $5.00
