In 1963, curator Walter Hopps—later the Menil Collection’s founding director—organized Marcel Duchamp’s first retrospective at the Pasadena Art Museum. A new book by Don Quaintance, "Duchamp in California: Walter Hopps Curates a Retrospective," 2025, revisits this landmark exhibition. In this lecture, Quaintance considers how the show reshaped Duchamp’s legacy and energized the Los Angeles art scene. This program takes place in the main building, located at 1533 Sul Ross Street.
As always, Menil programs are free and open to all.
