Join artist Not Quite Light, best known for his twilight and night time photographs of the city, and learn how to observe the night time urban world around you, and the techniques needed to capture the photographs that you want to take.
Night time in the urban landscape is magical, often full of atmosphere. However, it isn’t always easy to balance the various techniques needed to record this streetlit world, with so many different elements needed to make a successful photograph.
WEEK ONE – The first week will be spent exploring the way we see the world, and how other photographers and painters have made their work in the twilight and night. We’ll also discuss the basic techniques of night photography, taking a brief photowalk to understand how what we’ve learned can work in practice.
WEEK TWO – In this lesson we’ll take to the streets and wander the city at night, learning how to capture what we see.
WEEKS THREE – This is when we can really get to the heart of the matter, as we go out with tripods and explore photographing buildings and landscape with long exposure. We’ll use a variety of techniques, including painting with light…
WEEK FOUR – The course ends with a look at basic processing, how to get the best from you files.
You will need a DSLR, tripod and laptop so we can download basic free to use photo processing software for this course.
For this course you will need a DSLR or SLR, tripod and a laptop with photo editing software.
During the course you will receive PDFs with information and course notes.
Tea and coffee are provided. Any questions email – notquitelight at gmail dot com

Charlotte, music producer – “Simon is incredibly relaxed and approachable, with no pretension. He explained technical concepts in an accessible way and made sure every
question was answered.”
Sally G, mental health worker – “The NQL Night School has been a game-changer. Simon’s patient
guidance has helped me not only understand the fundamentals of photography but also feel empowered to make artistic choices rather than relying on happy accidents. It’s given me a sense of purpose and mindfulness during a tough time.”
Sophie H, architect – “Spending Monday evenings at the Not Quite Light studio has been an absolute delight. Simon has a wonderful way of breaking down the complexities of camera functionality and composition into concepts that are easy to understand and apply. His passion for photography made the course really engaging and the balance between theory and hands-on practice was perfect. Each session was really varied and delivered in a relaxed style of learning – a particular highlight was experimenting with long exposures and ‘painting with light’ on a photo walk. The relaxed and supportive learning environment made it a wonderful way to start the week, and I now feel more confident and purposeful in my photography.”
