Delivered by practicing professional planner Eric Aderneck, RPP, MPL, BCOM, DULE, who has developed and taught urban planning courses at Langara College, Simon Fraser University, and the Greater Vancouver and Fraser Valley Real Estate Boards, receive an expert introduction to urban planning and how it contributes to building sustainable and vibrant communities.

In this class you will learn what urban planning is (aka city planning, land use planning, community planning), why we plan, types of plans, define land uses and calculate densities, and how plans are prepared and implemented. Additionally, the roles of planners, stakeholders, and decision-makers in planning and development processes.

We'll explain planning concepts, principles, terms, and current issues, and how municipal plans and policies interconnectedly influence real estate development, transportation systems, and other urban matters, with local Vancouver examples. We will consider planning at different scales, at the site, neighbourhood, city, and regional levels, and review the application of land use tools, such as: plans, policies, bylaws, zoning, subdivision, and other approvals.

Specifically, the 5-hour online live interactive class covers the following components:

• The Need for Planning

• Planning and Sustainability

• Land Uses and Densities

• Types of Land Use Plans

• The Process of Plan-Making

• Regulating Land Uses

• Actors and Public Engagement

• Land Development Process

The class format includes presentation sections by the instructor, Q&A engagement, and facilitated group discussion sessions, along with breaks and lunch. Course materials and resources will be provided by email a few days before the start of class.

This condensed class is perfect for professionals from related fields such as engineers, architects, land developers, and real estate brokers who want to learn more about urban planning to advance their capabilities, for students who may be interested in exploring planning as a career, and for the general public to better understand local community plans and development initiatives.

Directly informed by my education and work experience as a practicing professional planner in the Metro Vancouver region over the past two decades, I have developed, delivered, and continuously refined content for teaching diverse audiences about urban planning and land development. This includes academic courses and shorter classes for students and professional audiences.

In sum, I have distilled my planning knowledge from my advanced education, real world experience with planning policy and land development, public and private sector work, along with years of teaching both in-person and on-line formats into a short class designed to teach you the basics about urban planning.

THE INSTRUCTOR - Eric Aderneck, RPP, MPL, BCOM, DULE

I have a wide range of experience in urban planning, planning policy, land development, real estate, and consulting. Over two decades, my diverse experience has included working for the public and private sectors in the Metro Vancouver region in different capacities, including planning, development, and teaching.

I am a Registered Professional Planner (RPP, MCIP) with the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) and the Planning Institute of British Columbia (PIBC). I am also a member of the Urban Land Institute (ULI) British Columbia Chapter and hold a LEED Green Associate credential.

My formal education includes a Master’s Degree in Urban and Regional Planning from Queen’s University, a Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce from the University of Victoria, a Diploma in Urban Land Economics from the University of British Columbia, as well as Advanced Project Management, Real Estate Construction & Development, and Management Communications Skills Certificates from Langara College.
