Laura McGlinchey x Hidden Door - Drop-in sessions

Join artist Laura McGlinchey for a collaborative, hands-on session as part of the creation of a major new installation for Hidden Door 2026
About this Event

Following the success of last year's much-loved Paper Cave at Hidden Door, Laura is developing a new large-scale environment for the festival's factory floor bar. Working with paper, cardboard and recycled materials, the installation will transform the space into a nest-like landscape of suspended screens, hanging forms and sculptural interventions.

This is a unique opportunity to work alongside the artist and contribute directly to the creation of a large-scale artwork that will become a memorable part of the festival experience. Whether you're an artist, maker, volunteer, student, creative practitioner, or simply curious about collaborative making, we'd love to have you involved.

What You'll Be Doing

Participants will help Laura to construct and install paper elements that will form part of the finished artwork. Activities may include:

  • Weaving and attaching paper strips
  • Assisting with large-scale paper construction
  • Applying paper and paste to pre-installed structures
  • Helping create hanging sculptural elements
  • Supporting the artist with practical installation tasks

Many hands will make a huge difference, with no previous experience is required.

Key Session Information
Dates

Friday 29 May

Saturday 30 May

Time

We'll be on site from 11:00am – approximately 5:00/6:00pm

Location

Hidden Door at the Paper Factory, 1 Turnhouse Road, EH12 8NP

Arrival & Access

These are informal, drop-in making sessions and you're welcome to join us at any point during the day. Registering helps us estimate numbers, but you can drop in at any point between 11am and approximately 5–6pm. There is no requirement to stay for the full session.

When you arrive, please make your way to the gate along Turnhouse Road, at the far end of the site. A contact number will be displayed on the gate - simply give it a call and a member of the team will come and let you in. As this is an active (and large!) build site, please allow a few minutes for someone to reach the gate!

Who Can Take Part?

This opportunity is open to anyone interested in collaborative making and large-scale installation work. Due to the scale and nature of the build, we recommend that participants are aged 16+.

What to Bring

Please wear clothes you don't mind getting messy. You may also wish to bring:

  • Work gloves (optional)
  • A water bottle
  • Lunch/snacks

The artist will provide all materials, including paper, flour-based paste, water and tools.

Accessibility

The majority of tasks will take place at ground level. Some opportunities to assist with ladder work may be available for those who feel comfortable doing so, but there is absolutely no expectation to work at height.

The Paper Factory has level access but as a former industrial site has uneven surfaces thoughout.

If you have any access requirements or questions before attending, please get in touch and we'll do our best to accommodate you.
