About this Event

"Everyday Anthropology: Practicing Anthropology in Your Everyday Life" Presented by the Edinburgh University First-Year PhD Anthropology Cohort.

Have you ever thought about what it means to unlock your front door? Or to brew your first cup of coffee in the morning? Join us as we unpack the meanings, patterns, and connections hidden in the physical objects you might not think twice about. We will explore how these objects shape and accompany our everyday lives.

In this interactive, participant-centred workshop, we will explore the themes, processes, and relations that underpin the everyday. Following anthropology’s goal to “make the familiar strange and the strange familiar”, together we will discuss culture, belonging, and systems that tell the stories of physical objects in our everyday lives.

We invite everyone to bring an object used in their daily life, such as a toothbrush, backpack, or a pair of trainers. The more unexpected the better!

This workshop will start with a short introduction to the anthropology of the everyday, followed by small group activities where we will collaboratively produce a narrative of daily life in Edinburgh.

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to see the bigger picture by appreciating the little things.

Family-friendly, multi-cultural, and open to all!
