About this Event

We’re so excited to share this new resource to understand air pollution in West Oakland! Come to our launch party to explore a StoryMap that tells the story of our neighborhood’s air through maps and data. It’s a tool for advocacy, education, and tracking our progress towards a healthier neighborhood.

To make this StoryMap, we worked with West Oakland residents and Spheros Environmental to measure West Oakland’s air for eighteen months. Then, we compared pollution levels to past measurements to see how our air is changing, and added in context about our neighborhood’s history, our top sources of emissions, and the decades-long fight for a healthier community.

At our launch party, we’ll share our research and takeaways. We'll have a quick program, and then you'll be able to explore the StoryMap and talk directly to its designers. You’ll learn how to use the map to understand West Oakland’s environment and advocate for cleaner air.

West Oakland’s air is getting cleaner. Come learn how levels of dangerous emissions are shifting, which policies are responsible for cleaner air, and where we need to focus now to get pollutants down to safer levels.
Hear from the citizen scientists who participated in the monitoring network. Dozens of West Oakland residents helped us track changes in air quality by hosting air monitors at their homes and businesses. Come learn how this project changed how they think about air quality.
Uncover the link between street sweeping and road dust. One of the reasons we started this air monitoring project was to understand how to combat road dust: one of the biggest sources of particulate pollution in Hoover Foster and across West Oakland. Road dust is made up of tiny particles of brakes and tires, and street sweeping can help mitigate it, but only if it’s done right. Come learn how the City of Oakland can improve its street sweeping to reduce road dust.
