About this Event

Leader: Boot Boutwell

Difficulty: Moderate, with some rocky inclines with uneven surfaces.

Pace: Slow

Appropriate for: All. Children ages 10+ welcome if accompanied by an adult.

Cost: Free of charge

About Boot: Roland “Boot” Boutwell, a freelance itinerant naturalist, has been leading nature walks for the Friends of the Fells for over 25 years. He has also led walks and/or taught botany programs for a number of other organizations including The Trustees of Reservations, Arlington Community Education, The Massachusetts Association of Conservation Commissions, Winchester public schools, Wright-Locke Farm in Winchester, The New England Wild Flower Society and the Massachusetts Audubon Society.

About the walk: We’ll take a walk from the Long Pond parking area to enjoy nature in late winter. The walk will focus on plant ID, especially the identification of deciduous woody plants in winter. We’ll also take a look at some evergreens, as well as a few winter weeds, those non-woody plants which are sturdy enough to remain erect well into or even through winter. Maybe we’ll see some signs of spring? We’ll also learn some fun and interesting natural history about the plants we see. Dress for the weather: there is no bad weather, only improper clothing.

Meet at the Long Pond parking lot, South Border Road (opposite #532) in Winchester.

Steady rain or heavy snow cancels.

**Please do not register unless you can absolutely attend this walk. We often have waitlists and would like as many folks as possible to be able to attend.**

Contact: Contact Boot Boutwell (781-729-4712) or [email protected] with any questions and/or concerns.

Dogs: This program is not suitable for our furry friends (it's a moderate hike with uneven terrain). Please take a look at our calendar for other walks that are good for dogs to join!

Please note: Emails from Eventbrite may end up in your spam folder. Please check your spam folder if you have registered for the waitlist to ensure that you are receiving the email notifications. We also suggest removing Eventbrite from your spam sender list.
