What Is This Event?

The Language Exchange Event is a fun, structured evening where you get to both teach and learn a language. Think of it like language speed dating.

You'll be matched with one or two partners based on the languages you speak and the ones you're learning. Over two short rounds, you'll switch between being the teacher and the learner.

How to Sign Up
Step 1 — RSVP on Eventbrite

Register for the event on Eventbrite. Once your registration is complete you'll receive a confirmation email with your order number.

Your order number looks like this: 14514772143. It appears in the "Order Summary" section of your Eventbrite confirmation email. Do not include the # symbol when entering it.

Step 2 — Fill Out the Language Form

After registering on Eventbrite, fill out the language data form. This is how we learn about your languages so we can match you with the right partner.

The form asks for:

  • Your Eventbrite order number
  • Your name and email address
  • Whether you're attending in-person or virtually
  • Whether you're OK with your partner joining virtually (if you're in-person)
  • Your native language(s), including any language you speak at a bilingual or C2 level
  • Language(s) you're currently learning at a B2-C1 level
  • Language(s) you're currently learning at an A2-B1 level

Important: use the same email address on the form that you used to register on Eventbrite. This is how we match your registration to your language profile.

Step 3 — Wait for Your Pairing Email

Once we have enough registrations, we'll run the matching process and send everyone their pairings by email. Your email will tell you:

  • Who your partner is (or partners, if you're in a group of three)
  • Which language you'll be teaching or learning each round
  • Whether your partner is joining in-person or virtually
  • A Google Meet link if your partner is joining virtually
On the Night
The Format

The evening is split into two rounds of approximately 30 minutes each, with a short break in between.

  1. Round 1 — Find your Round 1 partner. Check your pairing email for your table number and your partner's name. Head to that table at the start of the event.
  2. Round 2 — Rotate to your Round 2 partner. After the break, move to your new table. Your Round 2 partner will be someone different.
  3. After there will be time for general networking.

Your Role Each Round

In each round, one person is the teacher and one is the learner. Your pairing email tells you which role you have in each round and which language is being practiced.

  • As the teacher: you lead the conversation. Pick a topic you enjoy, introduce 2-3 vocabulary words or a short phrase, and guide your partner through using the language.
  • As the learner: come with curiosity. Have one question ready that you've always wanted to ask a native speaker. Let your partner lead and dive in.

Most importantly: have fun! Don't get caught up in the mistakes for the sake of a flowing conversation.

If You're Joining Virtually

If you registered as a virtual participant, your pairing email will contain a Google Meet link. This is your personal room for the evening; your partners will use the same link to join you for each round.

  • Test your camera, microphone, and internet connection before the event.
  • Join the Meet link a few minutes early so you're ready when your partner arrives.
  • Your link works for both rounds: your Round 2 partner will join the same room after the break.

If Your Partner Is Virtual

Your pairing email will include a Google Meet link if any of your partners is joining remotely. Click the link when your round begins. You'll need a device with a camera and microphone.

Groups of Three

If you're in a group of three, your pairing email will look slightly different. In each round you'll both teach and learn simultaneously with two different partners rotating around your table. Your email explains exactly who you're teaching and who you're learning from in each round.

Tips for a Great Exchange
Before You Arrive
  • If you're teaching: think of a topic you love talking about in your language. Food, travel, and everyday life work great.
  • Think of one specific thing you've always been curious about, i.e. a cultural question or a tricky grammar point.

During the Conversation
  • It's OK to use a mix of languages, especially at lower levels. Communication matters more than purity.
  • Ask your partner to slow down, repeat, or write something down if needed.
  • Share things you genuinely find interesting; the best language exchanges feel like real conversations, not lessons.
  • If you finish early, explore other topics or ask your partner about their language learning journey.

A Note on Levels

We match you based on the proficiency levels you shared on the form. If your partner's level is a bit higher or lower than expected, that's completely normal. Adjust your pace and vocabulary to suit each other.
