Singer and oud player and her band draw inspiration from classical Arabic and Ottoman music at free concert at North Vancouver Civic Plaza, 14th and Lonsdale.Lebanon-born, Montreal-based singer, oud player and musical director Lamia Yared specializes in traditional Arabic, Turkish-Ottoman and Sephardic repertoires. She has trained with renowned masters in Lebanon, Turkey, and Greece, honing her technique of Eastern chant and oud playing. Her most recent album, 2022’s extraordinary Ottoman Splendours, unearths poetry and melodies that would once have enthralled Ottoman-era rulers and courtiers.
Yared founded Ensemble Zaman in 2014, which revived rare early repertoire of the Levant region, covering classical Turkish music to Arabic chants. Yared’s first album under her own name, Chants des trois cours, featuring a septet, was released in 2020 to high praise. She has captivated audiences in festivals across Canada and around the world.
For this concert, Yared will be accompanied by Montreal-based cellist Sheila Hannigan, and three Vancouver musicians: clarinetist François Houle; percussionist (specializing in Persian hand drums) Hamin Honari; and guitarist and oud player Gordon Grdina.
