When a Fish and Game officer is bitten in half in Maine's Black Lake, local game warden Jack Wells (Bill Pullman) calls in paleontologist Kelly Scott (Bridget Fonda) from New York to identify what kind of creature could inflict such damage. What they discover defies belief: a 30-foot Asian crocodile, thousands of miles from its natural habitat, has made the pristine lake its feeding ground. Joined by eccentric mythology professor Hector Cyr (Oliver Platt), who's thrilled rather than terrified by the discovery, and cantankerous Sheriff Hank Keough (Brendan Gleeson), the team must capture or K*ll the prehistoric predator before it claims more victims. Their job becomes exponentially harder when they meet Mrs. Bickerman (Betty White), a foul-mouthed local who's been secretly feeding the beast like an oversized pet, and discover there might be more than one crocodile lurking in the lake's depths.
Writer David E. Kelley and director Steve Miner deliver a creature feature that's as much razor-sharp comedy as monster movie. The 1999 film's secret weapon is its dialogue—characters bicker, flirt, and trade insults with screwball comedy timing even as a giant reptile threatens to devour them. Betty White steals every scene she's in with profanity-laced one-liners that shatter her wholesome image, while Oliver Platt's croc-obsessed academic provides comic relief through sheer enthusiasm for the man-eater. The creature effects, mixing animatronics and CGI, create a convincingly massive and terrifying crocodile that makes the most of its limited screen time. John Ottman's playful score knows when to build tension and when to wink at the audience, perfectly matching the film's tonal balance between genuine scares and self-aware humor.
Original format and audio experience of this film faithfully reproduced by The Revival House. Presented in 35mm film unless noted otherwise.
