About this Event

LA Made in collaboration with 404 Media, a journalist-founded digital media company that explores the ways technology is shaping—and is shaped by—our world, is proud to present How AI is Changing (or threatening) the Future of Media.

Media executives across a host of different industries believe that the rise of inexpensive AI tools will revolutionize their businesses leading to a number of different results—from Hollywood now relying on AI for scriptwriting, special effects, and editing; to the publishing and podcast industries looking to create books and episodes at a torrential scale. But the rise of this non-stop content, at this unrelenting rate, is undermining business' credibility, and it’s unclear whether their customers actually have much interest in AI-generated content (with much of it being labeled "slop.")

Our lineup of distinguished guests will discuss the ways that AI has already changed the media industry by flooding the internet, social media, libraries, and the world around us with huge amounts of low-quality content—as well as highlight the ways that human creativity and human-made content can still stand out in a sea of slop.

  • Jason Koebler, 404 Media: Was the editor-in-chief of Motherboard for six years, where he was responsible for the editorial, creative, and commercial vision and execution of the brand. Jason has written and edited award-winning work; created, produced, and hosted shortform and longform documentaries and podcasts, and has covered everything from right to repair to the ticket scalping industry.
  • Samantha Cole, 404 Media: Is writing from the farthest reaches of the internet and in 2017, was the first journalist to uncover deepfakes. With compassion and accuracy, she’s carefully guarded the identities of sources who risked it all to change how the biggest platforms in the world moderate abusive material and brought harmful legislation to light.
  • Gita Jackson, Aftermath: Co-owner of the website Aftermath, a worker-owned, reader-supported news site covering video games, the internet, and the cultures that surround them.
  • Dexter Thomas, host of the K*ll Switch podcast: A three-time Emmy-winning journalist from San Bernardino, CA. Dexter Thomas began his reporting tenure as a culture and technology reporter for the Los Angeles Times, where his coverage contributed to a Pulitzer Prize and has since written for other major outlets including WIRED, The Guardian, VICE, and NPR.
