For the first time, we are elated to welcome Sebastian Sauer from Freigeist Bierkultur to Cochon Butcher! Since being founded in 2009, Freigeist has redefined German beer as arguably the first nomadic brewery in Germany. Through an early interest in culinary arts, Sebastian was led to brewing and its incredibly rich yet unknown history, specifically in the regions surrounding his hometown of Cologne. His beers are unapologetically NOT brewed according to the German Purity Law of 1516, which restricts brewers using ingredients other than hops, malt, water & (now) yeast. This allows for his beers to range a wide variety of styles, from classic unfiltered kölsch & dunkels to fruit/vegetable goses & imperial stouts. His portfolio not only shows some forgotten classic German styles, but influences from global brewing partnerships that Sebastian has established through extensive beer-related work travel! We are honored that he has chosen New Orleans as one of his 2024 destinations. For this event, we will offer a classic kölsch service (with glassware and all!) alongside 5 other spectacular & strange brews that Sebastian has concocted:
Ottekolong Kölsch-unfiltered unpasteurized ale fermented at lager temperatures. 5% ABV.
Dortmunder Export Lager-hoppy & malty lager. 5.5% ABV.
Abraxxxas Lichtenhainer-smoky sour wheat ale. 6% ABV.
Dunkel-dark lager. 5.5% ABV.
Rosler Wild Ale-Brewed w/ grape must. Collaboration w/ Stillwater Artisanal Ales and Meinklang (renowned Austrian wine producer). 6% ABV.
Yakedo-Hefeweizen brewed w/ ginger. Collaboration with Japas Cervejaria (Brazil). 5% ABV.
This event is non-ticketed and all beers will be poured on a first come, first serve basis. Sebastian will be present for the duration of the event and might even serve a kölsch or two. This will be our first ever kölsch service but we hope it won't be our last!
