(Full title) Knowledge Exchange with Students as Co-Researchers: The potential of collaboration
About this Event

This event is part of the School of Education's . These seminars are free and open to the public.

Host: Centre for Psychological Approaches for Studying Education (PASE) and Centre for Higher Education Transformations (CHET)

Speakers:

  • Jo Rose (School of Education, University of Bristol)
  • Alex Paterson (Professional Liaison Network, University of Bristol)

The OfS/Research England funded Bristol Model project was run by the Professional Liaison Network (PLN) here in FSSL from 2020 to 2023. It was a knowledge exchange project, focusing on co-produced research, that involved academics working in partnership with external partner organisations and leading teams of UG students as co-researchers. There were seven different co-produced research projects.
This seminar will explore the nature of collaboration between external organisations, academics, and students, and how collaborative processes manifested differently in different projects. We will outline how all involved spoke about the consequences of the Bristol Model, and consider how participation in the projects influenced the way in which they framed the nature and potential of applied research. The Bristol Model is a resource-intensive approach to promoting knowledge exchange and working with students as researchers. We will therefore reflect on how our learning from the project has the potential to influence both pedagogy and research practice and create the potential for a different way of being when working with others.

About

Jo is an Associate Professor of Social Psychology in Education, here at the University of Bristol. Her research interests centre around relational dynamics - understanding how people from different backgrounds work together. She is also a research methods geek, and particularly enjoys tangling with the myriad of ways that research methods can be combined to understand the complexity of collaboration in education.

Alex has managed the Professional Liaison Network (PLN) here at the University of Bristol since 2019. Prior to this he was a commercial research consultant, which fuelled his enthusiasm for applied research and academic/external partnerships. The PLN brokers partnerships between the University and external organisations (from small local charities and social enterprises, to government departments and large corporates) to support education and research in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Law.
