Join us and Marvellous Michael Anson, Stew Hotson, Anna Smith Spark and WP Wiles in conversation with Alexandra Beaumont.About this Event
Join us for another British Fantasy Society event where a group of insightful authors will discuss fantasy representations of religion, and how its nuance can provide interesting - and sometimes challenging - backdrops for writing compelling epic fantasy that discusses important issues.
Marvellous Michael Anson has been writing for over a decade and has self-published a thriller, HIS DARK REFLECTION, to critical acclaim. Her debut fantasy novel, FIRSTBORN OF THE SUN, is the first in a trilogy being published by Penguin Michael Joseph in October 2025. This novel also placed her as a finalist in many competitions, including the 2023 Future Worlds Prize for Fantasy Writers of Colour.
Will Wiles was born in India in 1978. He is a freelance journalist and has written about everything from Pot Noodles to jumbo jets. He once spent a week trying to find a Chihuahua skeleton. He is the author of fantasy novel THE LAST BLADE PRIEST, under the name W. P. Wiles, which was published by Angry Robot in July 2022. This won the 2023 Red Tentacle Kitschie Award.
Stewart Hotson, with a Celtic-Indian mother and a father of North African/Roma descent is a somewhat confused second-generation immigrant living in the UK. His novels include the BFS and Subjective Chaos finalist, Entropy of Loss as well as the tech thriller, Tangle’s Game and the science fiction novels based in UBISoft’s Watch Dogs universe - Daybreak Legacy and Stars & Stripes. When he’s not writing he can be found working as a financier in the City of London. Beyond that rather questionable career choice, he is co-owner of one of the UK’s largest LARP systems, Curious Pastimes, and is an internationally competitive historical fencer with a PhD in theoretical physics. Oh, and he really, really loves ice cream. His latest book, Project Hanuman, is out in November 2025.
Anna Smith Spark is the author of the critically acclaimed Empires of Dust and The Remaking of This World Ruined series, and the standalones A Woman of The Sword and In the Shadow of Their Dying. Previous jobs include English teacher, petty bureaucrat and fetish model. You may know her by the heels of her shoes.
Alexandra Beaumont is a fantasy novelist with a passion for folklore, playing musical instruments and exploring the wilds of the UK. Her latest release, Dissonance of Bird Song, is praised for being a “visceral and lyrical” page turner with “praiseworthy worldbuilding” and was recently named Distinguished Favourite in the Independent Press Awards. Specialising in gothic and folkloric literature, Alexandra's lyrical books weave together myth, magic and intrigue.Unfortunately we do not have disabled access to our events area as there are no lifts in the building, but staff are available to help those with mobility issues.
