About this Event
Divine Intervention (2002) by Palestinian director Elia Suleiman, may be described as a surreal black comedy. The film consists of a series of brief interconnected sketches recording a day in the life of a Palestinian living in Nazareth, whose girlfriend lives several checkpoints away in the West Bank city of Ramallah.
Known for its minimal dialogue, slow pacing, and repetition of behavior, the film’s unconventional style creates a powerful and often darkly comedic narrative that captures the complexity of life in Palestine.
Although Divine Intervention was nominated for these Palme d'Or at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival, its consideration for Best Foreign Film at the Academy Awards sparked controversy. Producer Humbert Balsan revealed that the Academy denied the film’s eligibility, citing that "Palestine is not a state we recognise in our rules."
