The April 12th Kaw Mission Councils Westward Expansion Lecture aeries will be "The Darkest Period: The Kanza Indians and Their Last Homeland- 1846-1873."The presentation will be held at 2 pm at the Methodist Fellowship Hall, 21 North Mission Street, Council Grove, Kansas 66846.
Ron Parks, the presenter will include a summary of the history of the Kanza tribe 1846-1873 and the reading of selected passages taken from The Darkest Period with the author's commentary. A book sale of the "Darkest Period"and signing will follow the program.
A native of Minneapolis, Kansas, Ron was the director of the Kaw Mission State Historic Site from 1990 to 1994 and again from 1999 to 2004. His award-winning book was published by the University of Oklahoma Press in 2014. Since then he has written a number of articles about the history of his homeland in north-central Kansas and is currently working on an environmental history of that same region. He currently resides in Manhattan with his wife, Judy.
The friends of Kaw heritage will provide refreshments after the program. The Kaw Mission Councils Lecture Series “Westward Expansion” is sponsored the Kansas Historical Society, Friends of Kaw heritage, Trembly, Young, Nystrom, Hylton, and Area Foundations, and trusts.
